[What to Do]
Monday: Part 1: You have recently been hired by a start-up company. Your company is growing and is looking to expand its office space. However, your boss and your colleagues don't know much about the best ways to connect computers to each other, and they have no idea about the common types of cables that connect computers together. So, being the go-getter you are, you decide to volunteer with your team to do some research about the best way to connect the computers in the new space.
You decide to use both the Internet and your MIS 423 book to make a PowerPoint presentation that includes the following information. Please get into groups of two or three and make a PPT that includes the following information.
Wednesday: Part 2: Hands-on Lab using Cisco Packet Tracer and Azure
To complete Part 2, please work on and complete the following :
[What to Turn In]
Once you are done, upload the following in a ZIP file in Canvas under Assignments > HoA#2: Cabling and Topology. Please do this by Friday @ 11:59pm. Do not forget to put ALL of the group members' names in the presentation so that everyone can receive credit.

You decide to use both the Internet and your MIS 423 book to make a PowerPoint presentation that includes the following information. Please get into groups of two or three and make a PPT that includes the following information.
- An overview of the most common network topologies. You decide to use Microsoft Visio to draw and explain each of the topologies in a separate PPT slide. In other words, you decide to have one PPT slide for each topology that includes the Visio drawing of the topology, the main idea of the topology, and any advantages and disadvantages of the topology. You decide to cover the following topologies: bus, ring, star, hybrids, mesh (full vs. partial). Please note: you all will present these to class once you finish, or on Wednesday.
- An overview of copper cabling (coaxial and twister pair) and fiber optic cables. In this review, you decide to provide an overview of the main points of the types of cables and an example of how the cables are currently used. Also provide a brief summary of the fire ratings. Please include the following specifics:
- What is a Coaxial Cable?
- For a mesh network, what is the formula to determine how many links are required for the number of nodes?
- How many links would a 10 node network require? How about a 17 node network?
- What is EMI?
- Twisted pairs (STP and UTP) and the purpose of twisted pairs (e.g., what do they do, why do they exist).
- What is a CAT rating and what are the CAT Ratings? What is the max bandwidth and frequency? What are the status (e.g., recognized / not recognized?).
- What is bandwidth?
- What is fiber-optic cabling? What is the difference between fiber and coaxial? Multimode vs. single-mode?
- What are the standard fire ratings?
- When would you use coaxial vs. fiber? What are the benefits and drawbacks?
Wednesday: Part 2: Hands-on Lab using Cisco Packet Tracer and Azure
To complete Part 2, please work on and complete the following :
- First, as a review, visit http://hub.totalsem.com/content/2302#path=2302,2307,2308 and complete the Topology Matching activity. Take a screen shot of the screen that shows you have completed the activity
- Next, complete the above PDF called "Building Network Models with Cisco Packet Tracer."
- Complete the "Cloud Concepts: Principles of Cloud Computing" tutorial here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/learn/modules/principles-cloud-computing/
- It would be beneficial to take notes, etc. You may be tested on this material. We can discuss this material as a class towards the end of class.
- After that, complete the "Introduction to Azure" tutorial: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/learn/modules/welcome-to-azure/

- Your PPT files from Part 1.
- Your packet tracer file for the "Building Network Models with Cisco Packet Tracker" tutorial.
- A screenshot of your completed Azure tutorials (cloud and the introduction).
