GROUP PROJECT
[Overview of the Project]:
Scenario: Imagine that you and a group of no more than five people own a network design consulting business. Western Washington University has put out a request for designing a new classroom in Parks Hall that will be exclusive to MIS majors. Specifically, the task is that you must design the “CLASSROOM OF TOMORROW FOR MIS MAJORS AT WWU.” This means that you need to anticipate what the classroom of tomorrow will need in terms of cables, wireless access, security, etc. The project has two phases:
[Phase 1: Responding to the Open-Ended Request for Proposal (RFP)]: -- 25 points -- Due 4/28 @ 11:59pm]:
Before starting design phase, you must upload to Canvas a two-page write up to me with a high-level overview of what you think the classroom of the future will look like. When doing so, you must cite content from the book and use your own experiences and recent news stories to motivate the design. For example, will your room need wireless routers, you need to anticipate the speed, connections at every desk, computers in the classroom, etc. Moreover, you must show me that your classroom design is better than the current classrooms in Parks Hall. Please do the following:
[Phase 2: Presentation During Class -- 50 points -- due May 13 @ 11:59am - BEFORE CLASS]
You will make a ten minute presentation of your group’s progress so far. The presentation should include your topic, a review of your ideas for classroom, the goals and motivation behind your project, your intended audience, a description of who will do what for the project, and anything you have already completed. Use the text in phase 3 to get started.
[Phase 3: Write-Ups & Presentations -- 125 Points -- due by Tuesday 6/11 @ 10:30am -- during class]:
We will discuss more about the project in class. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.

- Write-Up: Once your topic has been approved, you can begin designing the classroom. Your write-up should be 5 single-space pages at a minimum. Instead of submitting the write-up in Word format, I would like for you all to use a blogging website to write your case/brief. For example, you could use Blogger.com or even use the blog function of Weebly.com (this courses' website was built using Weebly). Doing so will get you more familiar with Web technologies and using them to communicate your ideas effectively. To see if your text is over 5 pages, you can write the case/brief in MS Word, and then copy it over to the blogging platform. Please also make sure that you use a few images in your write-up because, as we all know, reading text on the Web is somewhat boring. The images should convey to me exactly what your design should look like. You could use Microsoft Vizio which we will use in class. This is your chance to show me and apply what you've learned throughout the course so please use concepts we've discussed throughout the quarter.
- Presentation: The groups will give a 15 minute presentation about the motivation behind their classroom of the future idea, as well as the details about how it will actually work.
- Post Your Link to Canvas. Once you have completed the group project, please post a link to your Blog/website in the discussion forum titled "Phase 3: Group Project Links." In the discussion post, give a brief overview (executive summary) of the project.
- DO YOUR BEST WORK: Remember, you are posting the case/brief and the presentation online, so please do the best work as possible. Great write-ups and presentations could be used to discuss work that you've done in while in college (e.g., in interviews). Remember, great work does not go unnoticed!
We will discuss more about the project in class. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.
